The NBA Greatness Formula: Ranking the 378 Greatest Players Ever

I created a formula to determine the greatest players in NBA history!

LLuke BaumgartnerSeptember 14, 202612 min read

Introduction

One of the most debated questions in all of sports: Jordan vs Lebron. Furthermore, if you ask any NBA fan who their top 10 players of all time are, you will hear a combination of the same 12-20 names in a different order. As I pondered what my own list would look like, I realized that in order to be confident in my answer, I needed to define what a top 10 list truly means. Some people base their list off of who is the most skilled, the most accomplished, who they would rather have on their franchise now, or who would win in 1v1. That just didn't sit right with me. The best NBA players in history are commonly defined as "all time greats" or "the greatest players of all time". While vague, I believe the term "greatness" is the perfect baseline to measure basketball legends across history... but there's one issue. How can greatness be methodically applied in a non bias manner to players across multiple generations? So after some research, I decided that greatness in terms of basketball can be broken down into 6 factors:

  • Peak Dominance
  • Longevity
  • Championship Impact
  • Individual Accolades
  • Statistical Dominance
  • Cultural Legacy

While a simple concept at first glance, I soon realized that each of these factors are not concrete nor equal in in determining a player's all time rank. So to begin I labeled each factor holding a unique weight to this greatness formula as follows: 30% Peak Dominance, 15% Longevity, 15% Championship Impact, 15% Individual Accolades, 15% Statistical Dominance, and 15% Cultural Legacy. The framework was built. Now all I had to do was find a way to quantify each factor and create a formula and apply it to a 378 sample size of NBA players to find the results. Easy right? Not so much. Regardless, here is how I was able to do it.

Peak Dominance Formula

Peak Dominance can be measured as a player's most dominant season or span of seasons compared to the rest of their careers.

The Formula: 0.30(S) + 0.25(A) + 0.20(M) + 0.15(P) + .10(R)

Context:

S= Peak Statistical Dominance - 30% of formula. This includes the player's best season scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and blocks. Those stats are then compared against the player's contemporaries and era adjusted when appropriate.

A= Peak Advanced Impact Dominance - 25% of formula. This includes metrics such as PER, WS/48, BPM, VORP, and other historically available impact metrics. Missing historical metrics are not implied nor treated as zero.

M= MVP/Award Share Dominance - 20% of formula. This includes MVP voting share/finish, MVP wins, and other major season level recognition.

P= Best Playoff Performance - 15% of formula. This includes postseason production, efficiency/impact if available, along with the quality and depth of the postseason run.

R= Best Season Accolades - 10% of formula. This includes All NBA, All Star, All Defensive Teams, and other major season recognition.

WHY THIS MATTERS: This prevents longevity from dampening a player's actual ceiling. A subpar player for 15 years shouldn't outrank someone who reached extraordinary heights for a shorter stretch of his career.

Longevity Formula

Longevity should be measured as the length a player can remain meaningful for their team with an elite level of play. Longevity is NOT just the amount of games or season played. This formula distinguishes the difference between being in the league and being great in the league.

The Formula: 0.25(C) + 0.30 (E) + 0.20(G) + 0.10(L) + 0.15(R)

Context:

C = Career Length - 25% of formula. This is simply number of seasons played.

E = Elite Seasons - 30% of formula. This includes the number and quality of seasons meeting the model's elite performance criteria based on All NBA, All Star, statistical production, advanced impact, MVP voting, and defensive recognition.

G= Games and Minutes Availability - 20% of formula. This includes games played and minutes played. This rewards players who were consistently on the floor.

L= Late Career Productivity - 10% of formula. This includes how productive the player remained toward the end of his career.

R= Sustained Recognition - 15% of formula. This includes All NBA and All Star recognition over the course of their career.

WHY THIS MATTERS: 10 mediocre seasons should not be worth the same as 10 elite seasons. Longevity must be weighted to reflect greatness over the span of time.

Championship Impact Formula

The championship impact formula is made to quantify how much a player actually contributed to winning championships and deep playoff runs. This is NOT a ring counting category. A championship earned as a team's superstar is fundamentally unique from a championship earned riding the bench.

The Formula: 0.35(B) + 0.25(C) + 0.20(P) + 0.10(F) + 0.10(L)

Context:

B = Best Championship Run Performance - 35% of formula. This includes the best individual performance during a championship run. Regular season is not a factor.

C= Career Championship Contribution - 25% of formula. This includes championships won and the player's role on each team they won a ring with.

P= Playoff Performance in Title Runs - 20% of formula. This includes production and impact throughout championship level postseason runs even if their team came up short.

F= Finals/Late Round Performance - 10% of formula. This includes their performance in the Finals/Deepest playoff round.

L= Championship Leadership + Award Evidence - 10% of formula. This includes Finals MVP awards, demonstration of playing an integral role, and evidence of being a primary player in the gameplan.

WHY THIS MATTERS: A player who is the primary star with six rings should be valued higher than a role player with eight rings.

Individual Accolade Formula

The individual accolade formula is the most straightforward. This simply evaluates the individual resume of a player.

The Formula: Percentile(Raw Accolade Score) X 100

Context: The Raw Accolade Score is composed of the following components which then is normalized against the 378 player pool:

  • MVP = 12 points
  • Finals MVP = 8 points
  • DPOY = 8 points
  • All NBA First Team = 5 points
  • All NBA Second Team = 3.5 points
  • All NBA Third Team = 2 points
  • All Star = 1.5 points
  • All Defensive First Team = 1.5 points
  • All Defensive Second Team = 1 point
  • Major Statistical Title = 2 points
  • ROTY = 2 points
  • 6th man = 2 points
  • Other Major Individual Awards = 1 point

*There are no points for being inducted into the hall of fame.

WHY THIS MATTERS: This model is solely based on documented NBA accomplishments. Awards such as the Hall of Fame are a reflection of their impact on basketball which is what I'm quantifying. There cannot be arbitrary legacy points added in this section of the formula.

Statistical Dominance Formula

The Statistical Dominance Formula is a purely numbers based formula that converts career stats into a statistical score. This a broader formula than what was used for peak dominance, as this is intended to evaluate the entirety of a player's career.

The Formula: 0.20 (CR) + 0.25 (CA) + 0.20 (PS) + 0.20(SL) + 0.15(EI)

Context:

CR = Career Rate Production - 20% of formula. This calculation uses a minutes weighed season relative percentile of points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game, steals per game, and blocks per game. This is more accurate than using raw career averages across different eras.

CA= Career Accumulated Production - 25% of formula. Since career totals have a skewed distribution, this model uses log transformed totals of career points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks, before percentile normalization. This rewards players who paired high production with substantial career volume.

PS= Peak Statistical Production - 20% of formula. A players best three seasons of points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game, steals per game, and blocks per game are used with a minimum threshold of 1,000 mins played to ensure a statistical peak isn't defined by a one time wonder season.

SL = Statistical Leadership - 20% of formula. This quantifies how frequently a player ranked among the league's statistical leaders in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and blocks. Scoring receives the most emphasis and the calculation uses a saturation mechanism so that repeatedly dominating one category doesn't absurdly reduce a player who scored highly in multiple categories in the final score.

EI = Efficiency Impact - 15% of formula. This includes the use of TS%, PER, WS/48, BPM, and VORP to evaluate statistical dominance. If these metrics didn't exist during a player's career, it isn't fabricated. This rule is paramount as missing data cannot be counted as zero to ensure fair evaluation across generations.

WHY THIS MATTERS: Numerical data is the most unbiased way of analyzing basketball when used properly. An evaluation of statistics is the closest way to understand the sport of basketball besides watching it with your own eyes.

Cultural Legacy Formula

The Cultural Legacy Formula answers how much a player impacted basketball beyond the box score. This is the least quantitative factor but the formula used makes sure this isn't a measure of fame.

Formula: 0.25(H) + 0.20(S) + 0.20(G) + 0.15(I) + 0.10(F) + 0.10(T)

Context:

H= Historical Influence on Basketball - 25% of formula. This quantifies a player's ability to change how basketball was played, how the NBA developed, the league's historical trajectory, and how basketball is viewed in society.

S= Influence on Playing Style - 20% of formula. This quantifies how future players copied or adapted their skills, playstyle, personality, mindset, and approach to the game.

G= Global Impact/Popularity- 20% of formula. This measures international popularity, global reach, jersey sales, mainstream recognition, and international influence.

I= Iconic Moments/Identity - 15% of formula. This measures a players association with moments, images, and memories throughout NBA history. Examples include: Iconic playoff moments, famous games, signature moves, recognizable appearances, and historic performances.

F = Influence on Future Players - 10% of formula. This includes documented evidence of later players who modeled their game after them, studied them, cited them as inspirations, and incorporated their techniques.

T = Long Term Cultural Staying Power - 10% of formula. This measures a players cultural relevance across time. To be clear, this does not reward older players. The model evaluates staying power based on demonstrated cultural durability which does not assume that an active player will automatically maintain future relevance.

WHY THIS MATTERS: This model is uniquely evidence based instead of percentile based. This is important because cultural impact cannot be measured by statistics but must be quantified in order to grasp a complete perspective of greatness. This is the most diverse and relatable way for us to evaluate basketball players since the focal point for many if not all professional athletes is to leave their legacy on the sport.

Results

Each of the six factors receive a score from 0-100 and then are weighted accordingly in the final model. My findings proved that greatness is absolutely multidimensional and cannot be viewed as a simple concept for better or worse.

Rings alone do not determine greatness. Stats alone do not determine greatness. Awards alone do not determine greatness. Longevity alone does not determine greatness. Peak dominance alone does not determine greatness. Legacy alone does not determine greatness.

But together? The philosophy and data architecture of all six components of greatness work together to determine a definitive ranking of all time greats.

Here is your official greatest 378 NBA player of all time as of today. Enjoy:
